Rule of Law Stabilization Program-Formal Component

Afghanistan May 2010 - May 2011

Through the USAID Rule of Law Stabilization Program-Formal Component in Afghanistan, DPK will work to help make Afghanistan's formal justice system more accessible, reliable, and fair. Key activities will include enhancing the court administration and case management capacity of the Supreme Court and local courts; strengthening the nascent anti-corruption tribunal and anti-corruption panels; supporting training of judges, particularly anti-corruption judges; improving standards of judicial performance; assisting with judicial inspection tours; and implementing mobile court programs. The Project will also work with the Faculties of Law and Shari'a on implementation of the core curriculum and development of legal skills training, including moot court and law clinics.

Another key project activity will be to launch public awareness and education programs. Key to this effort will be assistance to develop the capacity of the Supreme Court, Ministry of Justice, and the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission to carry out their own strategic communications to publicize initiatives that protect citizens' security and well-being. The overall goal is to instill confidence in Afghan citizens that the justice system is fair and accessible and to encourage them to resolve their disputes by accessing and asserting their rights through the state justice system.
